So we're two days deep into this year's free agency period, and the San Francisco 49ers finally made a move by signing defensive lineman Glen Dorsey. I call him a defensive lineman as opposed to a tackle or end because I'm honestly not sure how he'll be used in San Francisco's scheme. Given the frequency that the team was out of the base 3-4 defense last season, I don't even know what to call it anymore.
But what's next? It would seem that a safety signing is on the cards. Yesterday, the rumors for Ed Reed got started up again, and personally, I think he'd be the best option for 2013. I think he has a lot more left in the tank than Charles Woodson, and I think he'll come cheaper than Louis Delmas will.
San Francisco needs stopgap at safety in free agency, not a guy like Delmas. He could end up breaking out with some team in 2013, but he has a ton of injury concerns, and I don't think he's a safe investment. Alternatively, this is the deepest safety draft we've seen in years, and that's a big deal. It's another reason why a guy like Reed makes so much sense.
Outside of safety, there's still some needs there. The 49ers will need to potentially find a kicker, a backup inside linebacker, possibly another outside linebacker, more defensive linemen and a cornerback. But who's available at this point?
Actually, there's plenty of names still available. It's hard to really list the defensive linemen these days because it's a crapshoot as to what the 49ers are actually looking for in their defensive line. Then we don't know what they'll spend on a corner, so could I really list guys like Nnamdi Asomugha and Aqib Talib?
Just take a quick look over this list of free agents. See anybody available that you think the 49ers would draft? Tell us why in the comments below.
