Every year, SB Nation runs a mock draft with the help of all 32 NFL bloggers. We have gotten underway this year and we are now six picks in. You can follow the draft in the SB Nation story stream posting each pick. This year's draft will go two rounds. There will be no trades, so that means I get three picks. Here is how the first six picks of the draft have played out:
1. Chiefs: Luke Joeckel, OT, Texas A&M
2. Jaguars: Geno Smith, QB, West Virginia
3. Raiders: Sharrif Floyd, DT, Florida
4. Eagles: Eric Fisher, OT, Central Michigan
5. Lions: Ezekiel Ansah, DE, BYU
6. Browns: Dion Jordan, DE, Oregon
The 49ers are still reportedly pursuing some free agent options like Israel Idonije, but beyond that, there is limited cap space for them to work with the next few weeks. The team has some holes to fill, and it appears more and more likely that many will be filled with picks in the upcoming draft.
Since we cannot trade up for a higher pick, we are left to consider what falls to the team at No. 31, No. 34, and No. 61. Given that context, are we strictly looking for the best players available? Are there specific positions you do not see the 49ers considering no matter what? Quarterback would be the position that is almost certainly avoided for the first three selections. Beyond that, however, there is some room to consider our options.
I'll post updates as we get further down the draft board so you have a better idea of what might be coming available when I pick at No. 31. We are actually further along in the picks behind the scenes, and there was a mini-run on cornerbacks just before and into the teens. For those of you that have been enamored with Tavon Austin, he is gone before I pick for the 49ers.
With all that in mind, who is on your short list of players, and what positions are definitely off your list early in the draft?
