We're on to the twenty-second pick of the second round, No. 54 overall in the 2013 Niners Nation NFL mock draft. If you missed parts of the first round, check out our entire rundown.
The Miami Dolphins are now on the clock, and their Niners Nation GM is Boss Clifford. With the fifty-fourth pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, the Dolphins select Johnathan Franklin, RB, UCLA.
Explanation: With the 54th pick, the Dolphins could use another offensive tackle, tight end, wide receiver, or cornerback. Although offensive tackle seems like the most glaring need in the wake of Jake Long's departure, I am confident the Dolphins will sign Andre Smith, Tyson Clabo, or Eric Winston sometime this offseason to anchor the right tackle on the line, while shifting second-year tackle Jonathan Martin to the blind side.
I would think that running back, however, is the most glaring hole on the roster to fill with the Dolphin's third pick of the draft. Although I was upset that Giovani Bernard was taken by the Bengals just one pick before, I am quite happy to snag Johnathan Franklin from UCLA. Despite an iffy offensive line and a compact 5'10", 205-pound frame, Franklin exploded for 1734 yards and 13 touchdowns in 2012, averaging more than six yards per carry. He shows great quickness, cutting ability and vision, and embraces contact despite his small size. He's been clocked unofficially at a sub-4.40 forty yard dash, and he had an outstanding Pro Day, showing nice receiving ability as well. A stable of backs of Lamar Miller, Daniel Thomas, Jorvorskie Lane, and Franklin could probably make up for the departure of Reggie Bush.
Trevor Woods: With Giovani Bernard going off the board here, the Dolphins find a running back plenty capable of replacing Reggie Bush. Franklin is an elusive runner that can break tackles, run north-south well, and has good vision. The other choice at running back here would be either Montee Ball or Le'Veon Bell.
Nick Chiamardas: The third running back comes off the board late in the second. Franklin has been a steady riser throughout the draft process and mid-to-late second round is a very possible destination for the UCLA product. The 'Phins really like Lamar Miller and still have high hopes for Daniel Thomas. Adding Franklin would likely mean the end of the line for one of the two. Franklin could be a true three down back over time. He's a sharp, one-cut back that's not as powerful as I would like for a back that lacks top-end speed, but has great lateral quickness that helps him avoid tacklers.
