Earlier this week, I pointed out how SB Nation's mock draft had the 49ers selecting D.J. Swearinger with their first pick. In a good bit of timing, my late second round pick in the SB Nation blogger mock draft came up, and I decided to go with Swearinger. I view him as a guy who really could provide a version of a younger Dashon Goldson with more upside. Mocking the Draft's Dan Kadar was a fan of the pick:
Here at Mocking the Draft, or SB Nation NFL Draft (whichever), we have quite strong feelings for Swearinger. He's an instinctual safety with the athleticism to gamble and make up on the play. Swearinger's ability to read the quarterback is matched in this year's safety class only by Kenny Vaccaro. He doesn't bite on play fakes and closes in a hurry. If the 49ers could get him in the first round, it's a good choice. To get him in the second could be considered the steal of this mock.
Earlier in the draft, I selected Jesse Williams in the first round, and Zach Ertz early in the second round. I'm not 100% sold on either of them, but seeing D.J. Swearinger fall deep into the second, it was a bit of a no-brainer for me. And that was part of the reason I passed on safety with picks 31 and 34. It was somewhat a roll of the dice, but I felt quality safety talent would slip to me with the 49ers late second round pick.
Swearinger has not gotten quite the love that Kenny Vaccaro, Jonathan Cyprien and other safeties have gotten, but he seems to be climbing in the eyes of prognosticators. Of course, while draft "experts" are finalizing their opinions, the 49ers and other teams likely have their boards long since done. Trent Baalke said as much during his Wednesday media sessions.
One of my followers on Twitter (@TDAVENPORT88) conducted an interview with Swearinger for Golden Gate Sports. Give it a read when you get a minute.
