2013 NFL Draft: 49ers visit with guard Brian Winters, per LaCanfora

As the 2013 NFL Draft approaches, some of the big name analysts are putting together their draft guides with a rundown of thoughts, analysis and some final news. Jason LaCanfora published his a couple days ago over at CBS Sports, and he had a final bit of 49ers news. According to LaCanfora, the 49ers were among a small group of teams that scheduled a "late visit" with Kent State guard Brian Winters.

According to LaCanfora, Winters played all five offensive line positions, but reportedly projected as a guard at the NFL level. LaCanfora is hearing buzz that he is a second round pick. Take that for what you will, but given that we don't know anything else, would the 49ers spend a second round pick, or even a third round pick on an offensive lineman?

A month ago, Tre9er talked about the need for help at offensive tackle, and how it likely is a higher need than many are considering. I tend to agree with that statement given the 49ers lack of tackle depth. The primary reserve tackle is Alex Boone, the team's starting right guard. If Joe Staley or Anthony Davis had to leave a game, Boone would replace them, and then Daniel Kilgore (or potentially Joe Looney) would replace Boone. That is not idea given that you go from one starter out, to two starters out.

That being said, are the 49ers just kicking the tires on Winters to see what he could do as a tackle? Or would it be part of the iron sharpening iron, and just finding a best available offensive lineman?
