The San Francisco 49ers continued adding to their 2013 NFL Draft class, selecting defensive end Quinton Dial with their fifth round pick. Dial stands 6'5'' and weighs 318 pounds. He might be a bit tall for the nose tackle role in the NFL, but he had experience all across the line at Alabama, lining up next to fellow fifth round pick, Jesse Williams.
Dial is yet another player the 49ers visited with at the beginning of the month. At the time, I did some quick research and came across his NFL.com scouting report. As I mentioned, he played all along the line, which provides the 49ers with versatility they value so highly. A lot of the analysis I am seeing points him toward more of a five technique end, but I have to think the 49ers will see what he can do at multiple positions along the defensive line.
According to ESPN.com's scouting report, his primary negative is that he is not viewed as a significant pass rusher. He is viewed more as a space eater as he does not seem to have substantial speed. I imagine preseason will see him get some opportunities in the 49ers base defense, but I'm not sure what we can expect when the 49ers move into their more frequent four-man fronts.
