49ers undrafted free agents: Early look at the rumored additions

The San Francisco 49ers have begun the process of negotiating with undrafted free agents, and several of the players have tweeted they will be joining the 49ers. The transactions are not official yet, but we'll take a look at the rumored players thus far.

Jesse Johnson-US PRESSWIRE

The end of the 2013 NFL Draft brought the usual flurry of undrafted free agency rumors. Players, agents and beat writers were tweeting out all sorts of information. The 49ers have not announced any signings, which is why you will not yet see these players on the 49ers.com roster page.

We'll have plenty more on each individual signing, but I thought I'd provide some details on the guys the 49ers have been connected with thus far. Remember, until pen is put to paper, these guys can still potentially change their minds (as can the 49ers). Such a situation happened with running back LeGarrette Blount a couple years ago.

Lawrence Okoye, Athlete/defensive line

This is the highest profile signing. The former British Olympian has never played American football, but did play rugby before switching to the discus. He is an incredible athlete, running a 4.78 even though he stands 6'5 and weighs 308 pounds. Coach Harbaugh spoke to the media Saturday night, and described Okoye as an Adonis and an impressive physical specimen. He indicated Okoye would initially work at defensive end.

Luke Marquardt, offensive tackle

The Azusa Pacific product is a monster of a man, standing over 6'8, and weighing 317 pounds. I saw one description that compared him at the Combine weigh-in to Ivan Drago. Another story had Luke Joeckel and Eric Fisher staring at him as he walked through at breakfast one day. Everybody loves a little hyperbole, but it sounds like he's a big boy who dominated at significantly lower level of competition.

Marquardt missed his senior year with a hairline foot fracture, and had another surgery on April 18. I would not be surprised if the 49ers stashed him on an injured list (PUP, IR, or otherwise) in 2013. It would give him time to learn behind a pair of great offensive tackles in Joe Staley and Anthony Davis. National Football Post has a solid scouting report on Marquardt.

Kevin McDermott, long snapper

The UCLA product is primarily a long-snapper. The 49ers obviously have a great long-snapper in Brian Jennings, but Jim Harbaugh likes competition at every position. There is no reason to think Jennings is going anywhere anytime soon, but you never know what McDermott might bring to the table. Here is some video of McDermott at a senior combine, along with an interview in which he breaks down long snapping.

Patrick Omameh, offensive line

Earlier this week, reports came out that Jim Harbaugh attended a private workout at Michigan and took some snaps from Omameh. Harbaugh is a Michigan man, so this should not be considered a particularly surprising occurrence. Omameh has been an all-conference offensive guard for the Wolverines. He started as a tackle, but quickly moved inside to guard. National Football Post and NFL.com both have scoutin reports on Omameh.

MarQueis Gray, quarterback/tight end/wide receiver

Although listed as a tight end by many scouting reports, Gray mostly played quarterback and a little wide receiver at Minnesota. He worked out at all three positions at Minnesota's Pro Day. He is apparently very raw, which is not surprising given the position changes. Here is a scouting report from National Football Post.

Sherman Carter, offensive line

The Tennessee State product is listed at center. He was second team All-Ohio Valley Conference in 2011, and a preseason fourth team "Phil Steele All American". I don't have a whole lot more on him, other than this interview with NFLDraftZone.com.

Darryl Morris, cornerback

User Ryanco had a chance to see Morris face San Jose State, and had this to say in the comments last night: "He is one of the fastest football players I have ever seen. A lot of guys run a 4.3, but Darryl actually plays at that speed and he isn't just a track guy playing ball he is a legit CB and plays much bigger than 5'10" 190lb. I could see him making the PS forsure and he could possibly have a future on the team as a slot CB. I believe he is also a gunner."

Chuck Jacobs, wide receiver

Jacobs is described as a guy who has game changing athleticism, but is still more of an athlete than a football player. He got extensive work in the return game at Utah State, and will likely get some return work in the preseason. LaMichael James and Kyle Williams are the favorites to handle return duties this season, but Jacobs will at least get some chances to show his stuff. National Football Post has a scouting report on Jacobs.

Mike Purcell, defensive tackle

The Wyoming Cowboy reportedly got his name out there with a strong performance in the Collegiate Bowl. He apparently met with the 49ers during the draft evaluation process. Here's how the Wyoming Cowboys website described him heading into his senior season:

As one of the senior leaders of the defense, Mike Purcell brings toughness and experience to the Pokes. He will be one of the top returning defensive linemen in the Mountain West Conference, and will be a leading honors candidate. He'll be counted on to anchor the defensive line and get some push up the middle to slow down offenses.

Alex Debniak, fullback

The first Stanford Cardinal in this year's rumored UDFA class, per Matt Maiocco. He is listed by Maiocco as a fullback, but he played outside linebacker with the Cardinal. Looks like competition for Bruce Miller in the fullback conversion role!

D.J. Harper, running back

The Boise State product spent six years with the Broncos due to injury issues. He tore his ACL in 2009 and 2010, then spent 2011 as a backup to Doug Martin. In 2012 he led the team with 1,137 rushing yards, averaging 5.0 yards per carry. This NFL.com scouting report points to him as better bouncing outside than hitting the holes up the middle.
