2013 NN NFL mock draft: With the twelfth pick, the Miami Dolphins select ...

As the weekend approaches, the 2013 Niners Nation NFL mock draft continues to roll on. We are now up to pick No. 12. Just a reminder that I will be attempting to post three picks every day until we get through round two. This will likely take us into the week of the 2013 NFL Draft, so feel free to consider this a sort of countdown.

The MIami Dolphins are on the clock and their Niners Nation GM is Boss Clifford. With the twelfth pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, the Dolphins select Jonathan Cooper, OG, North Carolina.

Explanation: An absolutely terrible spot to pick for the Dolphins. With wide receiver shored up over the offseason, the Dolphins still need a cornerback or two, but Xavier Rhodes isn't a zone corner and Desmond Trufant is a bit of a reach. So are any running backs or tight ends that Miami could use. Jonathan Cooper, who some say could challenge Warmack as the draft's best interior lineman (scoff!), is the best choice if no trades are allowed, since John Jerry at RG kind of sucks, and Richie Incognito is in his contract year. I was hoping for Lane Johnson to drop one more pick, or a top-level pass rusher as well, but this pick personifies unsexy utilitarianism. Jonathan Cooper matches the zone-blocking scheme Joe Philbin uses very well, with his amazing quickness and agility, and could form a nice interior duo for the Phins with Mike Pouncey for years to come.

Trevor Woods: I wouldn't have minded Boss being bold and going with Trufant here. Surprises do happen (A.J. Jenkins). With that said, Cooper is a solid choice that will provide Ryan Tannehill more time to make some magic happen to Mike Wallace for years to come. As Boss stated, he fits the 'Phins scheme and would show they are "all in" on improving their offense.

Nick Chiamardas: Cooper to the Dolphins is a bit unexpected. But I actually like the pick. Boss did a great job defending it and I agree with just about everything he said. Many of the next 10 prospects are fairly equal. I would say Cooper is probably the safest pick; or in other words, the least likely to be a bust. I disagree that Rhodes couldn't play zone. He's actually quite similar in skill set to former Dolphins corner Sean Smith. Still, adding Cooper with pick No. 12 is smart and gives the Phins one of the better offensive lines in the AFC, even after losing Jake Long.
