The 2013 NFL Draft is just under three weeks away, which means the 49ers are slowly wrapping up their pre-draft visits. The pre-draft visits don't tell us everything we need to know, but they at least give us something to discuss. Am I right?!
Matt Barrows has a solid list of pre-draft visits that include some workouts, and some basic meetings without actual workouts. The 49ers are looking at some big bodied options, and they have brought in or will bring in Georgia defensive tackle Jonathan Jenkins and Alabama defensive tackle Quinton Dial.
According to Ian Rapoport, the 49ers are bringing in Jenkins at some point this week. Jenkins measured in at the Combine at 6'3, 346 pounds. He has the kind of size to be a great nose tackle in the NFL, but Doug Farrar thinks he could potentially work as a 3-4 defensive end. The size is a concern given his fluctuations in weight, but Jenkins of course does not view it as a problem:
"I tell them you have nothing to worry about," he said when asked what he tells NFL teams about his weight issues. "It was the only time my football career ever that I was that high. It was the highest I had ever been at in my life. I didn't have the right knowledge of how I should have my weight and wasn't educated enough to keep my weight down. That's where I want to play so I can get the job down efficiently. They don't have anything to worry about; I'm going to do it."
Aaron Wilson is reporting that the 49ers hosted defensive tackle Quinton Dial late last week. Dial is not a highly rated defensive line prospect, but it sounds like he brings some serious versatility to the defensive line. Dial stands 6'5, 318 pounds, and can fit in just about anywhere on the line. Give him some time with Jim Tomsula, and this could be an interesting upside pick.
If you were handling the 49ers picks, where do you go with the defensive line? I went with Jesse Williams in the first round of the SB Nation blogger mock draft, but obviously some disagreed with the pick. Some prefer other defensive linemen, others do not think the 49ers should be going DL at all that early. What do you think?
