49ers announce promotions in personnel/scouting department

The 49ers announced several front office promotions on Wednesday. We take a look at what the changes mean.

Last weekend, the 49ers replenished their roster with eleven draft picks. Only a few days later, the team is replenishing the upper levels of their football operations department through promotions. And much like the football team, the 49ers front office is loaded with an assortment of talent. Nearly three months after 49ers director of player personnel Tom Gamble departed for a VP role in Philadelphia, the 49ers have filled his spot.

Earlier today, the 49ers announced the promotion of Joel Patten to Director of Player Personnel. Patten is in his fourth year with the 49ers after previously serving as their Director of College Scouting. In that role he managed the college scouting staff and the daily operations of the department. This followed 14 years of NFL scouting experience and extensive playing experience in the NFL and USFL as an offensive lineman.

The promotion of Patten opened up another role, which the team filled internally, along with subsequent dominos. The 49ers promoted Matt Malaspina to Director of College Scouting and Mike Williams to Director of Pro Personnel. Additionally, the team promoted Justin Chabot to National Scout, Steve Rubio to Regional Scout and Josh Williams to Pro Personnel Scout.

These are a lot of names people probably do not know. Malaspina apparently is a name to remember:

Malaspina is in his ninth year with the 49ers, having previously served as a national scout for the past three years. His duties included covering the Southeast region, as well as crosschecking college football's prospects throughout the country. Prior to that he spent five seasons as an area scout with the Seattle Seahawks. In 1999, he served briefly with the Carolina Panthers as a scout of the Southeast region.
