We have some sad news out of Santa Clara this morning. NBC Bay Area reported that a worker was killed at the site of the 49ers new stadium. According to NBC, an elevator subcontractor was killed when a counter-weight fell on him. The facility has upwards of 1,000 workers helping build the new stadium, which is scheduled to open in time for the 2014 season.

Santa Clara police and Cal/OSHA have begun investigating the death.

"The city is devastated," Beerman said. "Turner-Devcon has done such a great job with their safety plans. There's been 1,000 workers a day working at that site for almost a year now, and it's been amazingly safe. We can't explain how bad we feel about the family of the employee that died."

Our thoughts and prayers are with the worker's family.

Fooch's Update: The 49ers released a statement:

"The 49ers organization was deeply saddened to learn this morning of the news at the construction site. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends and co-workers affected by this tragedy. The 49ers family has lost a teammate today."
