Last week, Matt Barrows put together a rundown of the 49ers depth chart as he saw it, heading into training camp. The 49ers will not release a depth chart until some point in August, so for now we're left to speculate. Earlier this week I took a look at the offensive line portion of the depth chart, which is settled at least for the starters. The same cannot be said for the wide receivers.
Here is how Barrows broke down the wide receivers:
Z-WR: Anquan Boldin, Ricardo Lockette, Quinton Patton, Kassim Osgood
X-WR: Kyle Williams, A.J. Jenkins, Marlon Moore, Chuck Jacobs
Slot WR: A.J. Jenkins, Chad Hall
Barrows did not include Mario Manningham because of his injury status. Manningham will start the preseason on the PUP list, and while he could be active by the end of camp, I would be surprised by that. Accordingly, the 49ers will have to figure out a solution for at least the first six weeks of the season.
Of that group, Quinton Patton is the most likely to move up the depth chart. Ricardo Lockette gets talked up at times, but he has never been able to turn his physical gifts into actual production through two seasons in the NFL. That's not a long time, so it is possible he figures things out this year, but I'm not exactly holding my breath. It'd be great if he did, but I have a hunch Patton moves past him on the depth chart potentially after the first or second game of the preseason.
How do you see the 49ers wide receiver depth chart looking heading into Week 1 of the regular season?
