49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh met with the media today, and it should surprise nobody that he was asked about Colin Kaepernick's decision to wear a Miami Dolphins cap over the Fourth of July. Thankfully, Coach Harbaugh hopefully put a squash on most everything today. Colin Kaepernick will get a question or two at some point, but I have to imagine this just about ends it.
We're still waiting for Coach Harbaugh's transcript, so in the meantime, here are Coach Harbaugh's comments courtesy of Tim Kawakami's quick transcript:
-Q: You've mentioned this before with Colin Kaepernick-accept the praise and move forward. He's been out there this off-season, was at the ESPYs a little while ago. You have any conversation with him about someone who's been exposed so much so fast?
-HARBAUGH: He's been outstanding. He's had an outstanding off-season. We talked about it many times-his work ethic and what he does here and his preparation, it's top-notch.
And this off-season has been outstanding in that regard.
-Q: Any issues with him wearing a Miami Dolphins baseball cap?
-HARBAUGH: I know Kap. I know Kap and I know his allegiances, where they lie. They lie with us.
I chalk that up to a slow time in the media cycle. Know Kap very well and know exactly where his allegiances are.
-Q: Is Kaepernick going through a process where he has to get used to everything he does getting photographed or reacted to?
-HARBAUGH: Yeah, as far as I know he likes to get his picture made, just like I do. That happens quite a bit wherever he goes.
-Q: So you didn't have any issues with him wearing the Dolphins hat?
-HARBAUGH: I know exactly where his allegiances are. I know him. I know him. I know how he prepares. I know where his allegiances lie.
The 49ers quarterbacks are at camp already, which means Harbaugh and Kaepernick have spoken at some point in the past few days. I have to imagine the topic came up in some form or fashion. I could see Harbaugh joking with Kap about it. I also could see him at least mentioning what he said to the media.
I suppose Harbaugh could be secretly annoyed, but I just don't think he views it as a significant issue. As a man who threw out the still memorable "jive turkey gobblers", I just don't see him covering any sort of annoyance. I've been wrong before, but I just don't see it. He is incredibly competitive, but Kap on his own time, at a BBQ? Harbaugh might have seen it as a bit of a distraction, but I see him more inclined to blame the media, as he did.
