There were a few reminders today about how fickle the business of football can be. Darius Fleming was diagnosed as having an ACL tear and was waived in the same broad stroke. The poor fella never got to see the field, damaging the same knee in consecutive offseasons. For the Seahawks, it was determined that Percy Harvin will require surgery and will miss a minimum of 3 months. They say it could be more like 4 months, while some say more like the entire year. Even if he does come back, it will be difficult to develop chemistry with Russell Wilson during meaningful football games down the stretch. Their extremely expensive investment (both in picks and salary) is not looking too hot.

I'll start with Day 5 training camp recaps, because that's probably what you're most interested. The rest will be down below.

Day 5 Recaps

Among Christian Gin's notes are a few standouts at receiver (Marlon Moore and Chad Hall), some more poor play from the safeties (thankfully Eric Reid wasn't among the miscreants) and Anquan Boldin being an absolute beast in one on one contests. I'm so thankful for that trade right now. | 49ers 2013 Training Camp Practice Day 5: A.J. Jenkins injured? (Gin)

BASG is back from his vacation. Welcome back Steve. First day at camp and he noted how the stars were shining. Both Boldin and Vernon Davis looked amazing, which is what we'll need this season if we want to win the big one. Aldon Smith looks like a man possessed. He also looks a bit like a treasure troll in the photo in the post. | Stars shine at 49ers practice on Tuesday (BASG)

Matt Barrows gives a sort of greatest hits of Colin Kaepernick's throws. Anquan, Vernon and Chad Hall were on the receiving end of some beautiful plays toward the end of the day. | Training camp D5: A.J. Jenkins suffers hamstring strain; WR corps thinning (Barrows)

Matt Maiocco has his notes from the day. He cites Hall as looking great during most of camp. One name I noticed in there that I hadn't previously read anything about was Tramaine Brock. Matt says he made the defensive play of the day, a pass deflection against Moore, and is noted as having a very solid camp. He also puts to rest those silly Vernon at WR rumors. There's a video of Matt discussing camp embedded. | 49ers camp report: Hall picks up slack at WR spot (Maiocco)

Another player who seems to be getting rave reviews for their camp performance is Colin Kaepernick. Yesterday, Vernon Davis noted how he's got touch on his balls (mind out of the gutter!), something that was lacking last year. Vance McDonald also gets praise, something that had been missing to date. | Training camp report: Kaepernick can't miss, Jenkins leaves practice early with apparent leg injury (Cohn)

More Camp Notes

I'm getting worried about the health of our receiving corps. We keep hearing how Marlon Moore looks great, but is it because he's the only one able to walk? | A. J. Jenkins sits out 49ers' Tuesday practice (Maiocco)

Since Matt Maiocco's chat basically deals with camp, I'll put it here. One thing I gleaned from skimming it...he thinks that Craig Dahl is fighting for a roster spot. Maybe that was before CJ Spillman stunk it up today. We're in deep doo doo at safety if Eric Reid doesn't seize the reins...or if there's an injury. | Matt Maiocco's 49ers chat transcript (7.30.13) (Maiocco)

Darius Fleming

Cam Inman discusses the injury to Fleming. We also get the news that the team added camp body Travis Johnson, linebacker from San Jose State. He's their career leader in tackles for loss. | Fleming's knee injury opens door for San Jose State's Johnson (Inman)

Percy Harvin

Mike Sando, a known Seahawks lover, gives a pretty good breakdown of the timelines, implications of the different listings and the state of Seattle's roster in the wake of the Percy Harvin surgery news. In case you were curious. | Percy Harvin's surgery and implications (Sando)

He who laughs last laughs best. Oh, wait...every single receiver in camp is nursing an injury of one type or another. YIKES! |Now isn't the time to laugh at the Seahawks' misfortunes (BASG)

Ian Williams

It seems like every single training camp recap from every single day since it began has something great to say about Ian Williams. We were worried about the nose tackle situation, weren't we? But the team giving him money before he had really taken the field, a la Alex Boone, was a key indicator to many that things would work out fine. | 49ers' Ian Williams Has Been Impressive at Nose Tackle (NBC)

Remember back in the day, like since the dawn of time until around 2008, when quarterbacks were seasoned on the bench behind a veteran for years until they were ready to go. Yeah? The Rest of the News

John Madden discusses why he loves Colin Kaepernick. He had watched his games at Nevada on TV quite often. He just somehow flew under the radar. It's so nice to have a coach who can spot quarterback talent. | John Madden: 'I've become a fan of Colin Kaepernick' (LA Times)

Aldon Smith has flaws? Aside from getting stabbed at a house party, I thought he was perfect. He discusses the reasons for his funk at the end of the season. There's a video embedded with an interview discussing how he's going to get better and some thoughts on Lawrence Okoye. | Healthy Aldon Smith cites factors for late-season slump (Maiocco)
