Happy Fourth of July to everybody! And seeing as we're all football fans, we are now one month from the Hall of Fame Game! It's not 49ers football, but it is some actual football!
Today we celebrate America, which of course means it is once again time for the annual Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest at 9:00 a.m. PT. Six-time defending champion and Bay Area native Joey Chestnut returns to Coney Island looking for his seventh straight victory, and a potential record-breaking performance.
The hot dog eating contest is always entertaining, even if it looks a little nasty. Because...America! George and Rich Shea run the contest, and they entertain us to no end with their over the top love of the sport of competitive eating. George handles introductions, while Rich does play-by-play for ESPN2.
George's introductions are pretty amazing as he provides a carnival barker style that is pretty awesome. Here is one of his recent intros:
They say that competitive eating is the battleground upon which God and Lucifer wage war for men's souls, my friends, and they are right! For this is a battle of the ages, this is a battle for the titans! The being that is half god and comes to the earth only once in only one location! And that is here at the corner of Surf and Stillwell Avenue! The Mt. Sinai of Mastication! The Madison Square Garden of Gurgitation! So it is, so it shall always be....Brooklyn, Let the contest BEGIN!
The contest is at 9:00 a.m. PT on ESPN2, and then will re-air at 10:00 a.m. PT on ESPN. We'll have 49ers-specific content during the day, but for now, enjoy the hot dog eating contest! Here's last year's contest:
