This Week in Niners Nation: Ahmad Brooks (Yikes!), The Lawrnece Okoye Problem (7/5)

This Week in Niners Nation, a weekly revisiting of Niners Nation content. We always say no news is good news this time of year, so when Ahamd Brooks' name arose with the words 'possible assault charges' next to it, we all buried our heads. He hogged most of the spotlight by allegedly bottling a teammate, others get the spotlight by having a 90-in-90 breakdown written about them. I know which method I prefer.

SMH. It means shaking my head in internet speak. I was late to catch on, so don't feel bad if you didn't know. I think SMFH may be more appropriate. You can figure out what the extra letter stands for. Ahmad Brooks has had run-ins with the law and team rules in his pro and college career, once allegedly punching a woman in the face as a member of the Cincinnati Bengals, but none since becoming a 49er. The details of these allegations are somewhat shocking. And it doesn't appear to be he-said, he-said stuff. He is said to have bottled camp body Lamar Divens in front of Lawrence Okoye and Michael Purcell after a night of drinking. We can expect some type of suspension, even if no charges are to be filed (the latest rumor).

In other news, well, there really is no other news. Good one Brooks. You make a mistake two days before the draft and nobody notices. But in the early July....

The question becomes, what does the team do with Brooks. Some have called for his release (Grant Cohn being their champion). I'm assuming that the league will suspend him if the team doesn't do it first. SoCaliSteph has a good article detailing the ins and outs of the alleged crime and proposed punishments. There are some hearty debates in the comments. | How should the 49ers react to Ahmad Brooks' alleged assault on teammate Lamar Divens? (Steph)

90-in-90

One of the positions going into training camp that has the biggest question marks around it is cornerback. We have four guys that should be our top-four and I have no idea how they'll be ordered. I also think Nnamdi Asomugha may not make the roster, but realize I'm in the minority there. The guys at the back end of the position group will be in a tough fight for the final spot(s). Tramaine Brock has the inside edge and the highest salary, which is not always a good thing in this league. | 90-in-90 breakdowns: Tramaine Brock (Fucillo)

Colt McCoy is a virtual lock to make the team and be the 49ers' number two quarterback. I don't see it playing out in any other way. The question becomes, how viable is he as a replacement for Colin Kaepernick should the unspeakable occur? I'm not sold. Not this year. I think that after a full year with Coach Harbaugh and the offense he'll be ready, but I'd be worried right now. What do you think? | 90-in-90 breakdowns: Colt McCoy (Brady)

If asked who my favorite 49er is I always say Patrick Willis. I was a huge Ronnie Lott fan growing up, and he's this generation's Ronnie. If I had to pick a second-favorite it would be Frank Gore. He's just so damned tough. A strong season puts him over 10,000 yards! In a recent #Channel49 session we were asked his chances for making the HOF. Well, 10k yards sure helps. | 90-in-90 breakdowns: Frank Gore (liberty_JAC)

Alex Boone was one of the biggest surprises last season for the 49ers. Do you remember when we were all freaking out about not signing a guard in free agency. We were all like, OMG, WTF and like, 'what'n the pee buckets is going on 'round here?' Then Harbaalke proved once again why we should just trust them (it...him...what is Harbaalke's pronoun?). He's a keeper. | 90-in-90 breakdowns: Alex Boone (Tre)

When discussing Cornelius Carradine (a great name in and of itself) and his roster spot, it's not a question of if, but when. When will Tank Carradine (a better name!) be gracing us with his presence? It's possible he starts the season on the PUP list. When he fell to us in the second round I was ecstatic. I think we all were. Everyone likes to compare Marcus Lattimore's career trajectory to Frank Gore, but I think Tank's is just as valid. | 90-in-90 breakdowns: Tank Carradine (Tre)

I'm not even going to discuss the odds of Phil Dawson making the roster. The idea of having special teams that are special in a good way, not special in a bad way, is such an exciting prospect that I'm salivating as I write this. I'm also hungry and hungover. Even if you don't want to read about PD4, please view this link and look at the awesome pic in the comments. | 90-in-90 breakdowns: Phil Dawson (Woods)

Other News

What will happen with Lawrence Okoye is a big mystery. His situation is unique and we have to start thinking about what will happen if he's not NFL-ready at the end of training camp. He's high-profile, so there's no hiding him on the practice squad. Will other teams who aren't going to compete this year swoop him up? Wes takes a deeper look. | Lawrence Okoye's High Profile and Inexperience Pose a Problem (Hanson)

In our weekly #Channel49 Q&A session the question was asked, what non-football athlete would you want for the team. Woods and I both said LeBron James, but he said at TE and I said DE. Who else could fit the bill? We also talked about the top-100 and Vernon Davis at WR, among other things. | Niners Nation #Channel49 Twitter Q&A Mailbag, Vol. 16: NFL Top 100, Fantasy Football, Lebron James at Tight End, and more (Woods & Malone)

In the wake of the 49ers secondary's failings in the playoffs, Donte Whitner has received a fair share of the blame. Some have defended the secondary by citing the failings of the pass rush once injuries took its toll. Steve Busichio gives a discourse on why Whitner's criticism, while possibly excessive, is definitely merited. | Criticism of Donte Whitner has its merits (Busichio)

FanPosts

There was not a lot of action in the FanPost department this week. I won't get angry and will instead assume you are all saving your typing fingers for the season. With training camp around the corner, finger callisthenics are in order.

The news of the week being what it was, the first FanPost of the week will be more of the same. Garethmcknight explains why Brooks' warrant is not the ideal beginning to what we wish to be a Super season. | Brooks arrest warrant not the ideal preparation for new season (Garethmcknight)

Brother Girth goes out of their way on a lazy day to explain how Lawrence Okoye could make the 53-man roster. I still think it's a bit of a stretch to think he'll be able to contribute in a meaningful way. Nnamdi noted how each and every guy on the defense knows exactly where the other guy is at all times. It's tough enough for a player with 10 years experience to step in and mesh, but someone who's never played the game? Liability? | How Lawrence Okoye Makes the 53 Man Roster (Brother Girth)
