49ers training camp practice recap, Day 14: Pass rush strong, B.J. Daniels gets extra snaps

The 49ers completed their fourteenth day of practice on Monday. We take a look at the highlights, including B.J. Daniels getting extra work, strong rush from the defense, the work of rookie cornerbacks, and some injury news.

The San Francisco 49ers got through Day 14 of practice on Monday afternoon, and it was a strong day for the defense. It sounds like the pass rush was bringing it on Monday, with even Lawrence Okoye getting in on the action. According to the reports (linked below), Okoye broke up a pass on one play, and got enough pressure to draw a hold from offensive tackle Carter Bykowski on another play.

It also appears that Darryl Morris is putting together a nice little camp, with competition potentially heating up between him and Marcus Cooper. Both guys are at the end of the depth chart, but the 49ers will likely keep one of them on the practice squad, at least. I've gone back to look at different aspects of last week's game, but one drawback to NFL.com/PreseasonLive is that we cannot view coaches' film yet. That will be available on NFL Rewind when the season starts. I mention this because the coaches' film provides a much greater perspective on the cornerbacks. We can see how wide receiver routes develop and how the corners are covering the receivers, which is something we cannot usually see on the regular coverage.

One of the more notable aspects of Monday's practice was B.J. Daniels getting more snaps with the second team offense. Coach Harbaugh indicated Daniels was likely getting snaps this Friday against the Chiefs. On Monday, he struggled, completing (per BASG) 17 of 33 passes with four interceptions. I have to imagine that quarterbacks might be a little more inclined to force something in practice, as opposed to during a game, but who knows. Daniels got a running back snap and special teams work last week. While his odds of making the roster are long, plenty of us are curious to see what he can do in game action.

A.J. Jenkins did not have a catch in practice, which was covered in excruciating detail by the beat writers. His snaps are down the last couple days, and while that is partially a product of having more receivers on the field, it remains another frustrating part of this whole process. At times it feels like this is becoming some sort of self-fulfilling prophecy, but hopefully he can put together a solid showing this Friday.

On the injury front, Tarell Brown and Tramaine Brock were both back at practice. Brown got work in the slot, which is what Vic Fangio indicated last week was the plan for this week. Fangio had said that the team needed to be prepared for every contingency, particularly depending on whether or not the 49ers kept one or both of Perrish Cox and Michael Thomas. Cox seems to be closing in on lock status, but you never know what will happen over the next three weeks. And having slot skills in his repertoire can only help Brown at this poitn.

Carlos Rogers was out today, with what Barrows described as an apparent hamstring injury. Joe Staley, Jewel Hampton and Raymond Ventrone all remained out. Vance McDonald also remains sidelined, and is not expected to play this Friday against the Chiefs. Coach Harbaugh said McDonald could be out seven to ten days, so we likely won't see much of him at practice this week.
