The San Francisco 49ers wrapped up their final open practice of training camp on Wednesday, as they get ready for Friday's preseason contest with the Kansas City Chiefs. The 49ers will have a closed practice tomorrow in which they run through a mock game. After Friday's game, they will continue practicing, but media will have limited access at that point.
Based on early reports (some linked below, waiting for more), today's practice saw some good work from the offense. Chad Hall had what sounds like the play of the day with a sort of juggling Hail Mary catch in the back of the end zone on a 30-yard pass from Colt McCoy.
Austin Collie led the way with upwards of seven receptions for 50 yards and a touchdown. Collie is expected to get more work on Friday as the team continues trying to figure out what they have with him. I'm not any closer to figuring out how it impacts the 53-man roster, but it will be interesting to track each week.
It sounds like both MarQueis Gray and Garrett Celek had solid performances. One report had Gray catching five passes for 80 yards and two touchdowns in a variety of drills. Celek appears to have caught a couple passes, including a touchdown during a red zone drill. Both tight ends will get plenty of work on Friday with Vance McDonald sidelined. Celek is the incumbent third tight end, but if they can get something more dynamic from Gray, it could be a close competition. That, or Gray is locking in a potential practice squad spot.
Eric Reid handled first team free safety snaps for the third straight day. Reid got some first team snaps last week as well, but still was the No. 2 safety. We'll see if it is Reid or Spillman who gets the start on Friday.
