49ers vs. Chiefs preseason 2013: Player at each position I will be watching tonight

Last week, I put together a list of one player from each position group I was hoping to watching during the 49ers-Broncos preseason opener. It isn't easy tracking every player, but I kept an eye on most of the players on the list. Some proved easier than others, particularly B.J. Daniels and Jewel Hampton, since Daniels did not get any QB snaps, and Hampton did not get any snaps at all.

I thought I'd bring the list up once again. While I probably will end up missing some of the players, it's still helpful in coming up with some of the names to watch.

Offense:

QB: Colin Kaepernick, Colt McCoy, Scott Tolzien, B.J. Daniels

Who I'll watch: B.J. Daniels - I was hoping to catch him last week, but his only snaps were at running back and on special teams. Jim Harbaugh indicated all four quarterbacks would probably get snaps today. Daniels won't be pressing Colin Kaepernick for playing time anytime soon, but there is still a curiosity factor.

OTs: Joe Staley, Carter Bykowski, Anthony Davis, Kenny Wiggins, Patrick Omameh

Who I'll watch: Kenny Wiggins - The 49er second string offensive line struggled last Thursday. It was hard at times to tell who was to blame because there was so much bad going on. One problem that created was making it difficult to figure out what Scott Tolzien or Colt McCoy were doing when they were busy running for their lives. Let's hope for more.

Interior Line: Mike Iupati, Joe Looney, Al Netter, Jonathan Goodwin, Daniel Kilgore, Alex Boone, Adam Snyder

Who I'll watch: Joe Looney - The 49ers lined up Looney at center after Daniel Kilgore last week. There is no word on Jonathan Goodwin's status for this week, but expect Looney to get more center snaps. Daniel Kilgore seems locked in as the center of the future, while Looney has a chance to become the swing man on the interior. He struggled at times, as did much of the reserve offensive linemen, so we'll see what he does tonight against the Chiefs.

RB: Frank Gore, LaMichael James, Anthony Dixon, Jewel Hampton, D.J. Harper, Bruce Miller, Jason Schepler

Who I'll watch: Jewel Hampton - He missed last week's game with an injury, but has been back at practice the last few days. The running back position could be closing up for both Hampton and D.J. Harper, but at the very least they could be competing for a practice squad spot.

TE: Vernon Davis, Vance McDonald, Garrett Celek, MarQueis Gray

Who I'll watch: MarQueis Gray - After a relatively quiet performance against the Broncos, reports out of practice indicated Gray has looked strong this week. With Vance McDonald sidelined for this game, Gray and Celek both get a chance to show what they can do with some extensive playing time.

WR: Anquan Boldin, A.J. Jenkins, Ricardo Lockette, Austin Collie, Lavelle Hawkins,Kyle Williams, Chad Hall, Kassim Osgood, Chuck Jacobs, Marlon Moore, Quinton Patton

Who I'll watch: A.J. Jenkins - Was it really going to be anybody else? My second choice would probably be Ricardo Lockette or Austin Collie, but of course I want to see Jenkins make an impact. Moving on....

Defense

RDT: Justin Smith, Will Tukuafu, Tony Jerod-Eddie, Ray McDonald, Demarcus Dobbs, Lawrence Okoye

Who I'll watch: Demarcus Dobbs - I thought I'd mix things up, even though Okoye is high on my list of players to watch. Dobbs has been serving as the primary backup to Justin Smith. It was announced yesterday that Dobbs will be suspended for one game to start the season. It does not sound like a new violation since his DUI last November, but we'll see if he comes out a little extra fired up tonight. I don't think the suspension will cost him a roster spot, but he may want to deliver a message today.

NT: Ian Williams, Glenn Dorsey, Lamar Divens, Mike Purcell

Who I'll watch: Glenn Dorsey - Williams dominated at nose tackle last week, while Dorsey was solid in more of a utility role. I want to pay a little closer attention to Dorsey this week and see if he can continue developing into that super-sub kind of role.

ILB: Patrick Willis, Michael Wilhoite, Nick Moody, NaVorro Bowman, Nate Stupar, Travis Johnson

Who I'll watch: Nick Moody - The 49ers linebacker was looking solid last week before injuring his lower leg. He was back at practice this week, so hopefully he'll be back on the field. He's looking at primarily a special teams role, but the primary backup ILB role is up for grabs.

OLB: Aldon Smith, Parys Haralson, Corey Lemonier, Ahmad Brooks, Cam Johnson,Dan Skuta

Who I'll watch: Corey Lemonier - After last week's strong performance, of course I want to see Lemonier does in his second game. Speaking of which....

LCB: Carlos Rogers, Tramaine Brock, Marcus Cooper, Tarell Brown,Nnamdi Asomugha, Perrish Cox, Darryl Morris

Who I'll watch: Darryl Morris/Marcus Cooper - I gotta go with both of them. Vic Fangio had praise for the speedy Morris this past week, and I'd say these two are competing for at least a practice squad spot and maybe even a spot at the end of the roster. Either way, the two rookie cornerbacks could be exciting to watch tonight.

SS: Donte Whitner, Craig Dahl, Darcel McBath, Raymond Ventrone

Who I'll watch: Donte Whitner - I kind of want to see if Alex Smith goes deep against Whitner. We know Whitner struggles in coverage, so we'll see if Smith takes some shots.

FS: C.J. Spillman, Eric Reid, Trenton Robinson, Michael Thomas

Who I'll watch: Michael Thomas - I'm sure everybody will be paying close attention to Reid, but Thomas quietly put together a solid performance against the Broncos. He is getting work primarily as the slot cornerback, so we'll see how the team spreads him around today.
