Vic Fangio very frank in his assessment of Nnamdi Asomugha

Vic Fangio had a fairly frank assessment about Nnamdi Asomugha on Friday. The 49ers media has been fairly positive about Nnamdi in recent days. What do we make of the conflicting opinions?

49ers defensive coordinator Vic Fangio met with the media before lunch today, and he was asked several questions about the team's cornerback situation. In discussing the cornerbacks, it was interesting to note how frank Fangio seemed to be with regard to Nnamdi Asomugha.

In discussing Nnamdi, Fangio stated that he had some good days in practice, but he also had some days where they were not sure if he still had it. He said Nnamdi was sort of in the middle right now. He went on to say that Nnamdi was reaching an age when some players started to see their physical skills diminish. Fangio said they needed to wait and see if he still had gas left in the tank, and if he could play like he did prior to going to Philadelphia.

Nnamdi has received praise the last few days, so it does leave us wondering what it all means. Tre9er tweeted out some interesting retweets, including someone asking if it was meant more for motivation for Nnamdi. And maybe it is. Maybe Fangio is sort of sand-bagging us, and any teams that might be looking for some insight from the defensive coordinator.

The 49ers hit the field next week against the Denver Broncos, giving us our first chance to see him in action with our own eyes. Although Peyton Manning and the first string Broncos wide receivers will not be on the field for much of the game, there will be plenty of insight to be gleaned from the performances.
