Jon Baldwin, A.J. Jenkins pass physicals, deal is now done

The 49ers and Chiefs have made the Jon Baldwin-A.J. Jenkins trade official, as both players passed their physical. We break down the latest news.

USA TODAY Sports

In case there were any remaining question marks, the 49ers trade of A.J. Jenkins to the Kansas City Chiefs for Jon Baldwin is officially complete. Jim Harbaugh confirmed that both players pass their physicals. Harbaugh was on KNBR this morning discussing the deal, and he said that Baldwin was already in meetings and would be on the practice field this afternoon.

The media asked Harbaugh if two weeks was enough time to fully evaluate Baldwin. While it's a short time, the 49ers would likely have tape on his first two preseason games, and of course they have some scouting from his first two years in the league. It's not an ideal situation, but they are not going into this blind.

This weekend, the 49ers face the Minnesota Vikings, and have 11 receivers on the roster. The team knows what they have with Anquan Boldin. After that, even with Kyle Williams, Quinton Patton and probably Marlon Moore just about locked up as starters, they still need to know what those three bring to the table opposite Boldin. It will be interesting to see how the 49ers rotate in their players.

One interesting note is that Baldwin was assigned No. 89. That is the same number as Vance McDonald. While that does not necessarily dictate roster chances, it is odd that two offensive players would get the same number. McDonald missed last week's game with an injury, and it seems somewhat unlikely that we'll see him on the field this Sunday, so I guess it's not entirely crazy. But still, a little bit weird.

Jon Baldwin initially was signed No. 89, but it has been changed to No. 84, according to the beat writers.

And just for the heck of it, I've included an approval poll on the deal.
