49ers interested in QB Seneca Wallace, per Maiocco

Matt Maiocco is reporting the 49ers have shown interesting in QB Seneca Wallace. We look at the implications on the backup QB competition.

The 49ers backup QB situation has been a question mark all preseason long, and it appears the team is looking at some new options. Less than a week after neither Colt McCoy or Scott Tolzien impressed against the Kansas City ChiefsMatt Maiocco is reporting the 49er "have shown interest in ... Seneca Wallace and are expected to visit with the veteran free agent ... "

The 49ers got a big performance out of B.J. Daniels this past week, but given that it was one drive in the fourth quarter of a preseason game, it is not surprising the 49ers are looking to add an option to the mix. McCoy and Tolzien were initially considered the primary competitors for the backup QB role, but with neither impressing, the team needs to think outside the box.

Wallace was released by the Saints earlier this week, after signing with them in mid-April. He had previously been out of the league after the Cleveland Browns released him at the end of training camp last year. Ironically enough, he had been competing with Colt McCoy to be Brandon Weeden's backup. Wallace has some scrambling ability, but has never been particularly consistent with his accuracy.

While the team would hope and pray never to see any of these guys on the field this season outside of a blowout this season, it'd be nice to have somebody remotely stable backing up Colin Kaepernick.

I emailed Danny Kelly from Field Gulls to get a few thoughts on a guy who was with them way back in 2009. Here's a little bit of what he had to say (after he stopped laughing):

He's a mobile, veterany guy...the joke at FG is that he's a guy that will add mobility and always give you a two yard loss on a scramble...or something along those lines..he always used to run out of bounds for a loss...that was his legacy...The thing about him though is that he's mobile and has a strong arm...he provides value because he can escape pressure and get out of the pocket if need be...tell him to dump it off to your skill position guys - he's a game manager
