The San Francisco 49ers began their roster cuts yesterday, releasing five players including quarterback Scott Tolzien. The decision to cut Tolzien was not shocking, but initially I was a little surprised it happened before the final preseason game.
And yet, after thinking it through, the timing isn't all that surprising either. The 49ers backup QB situation has been a bit of a jumbled mess this offseason, with Colt McCoy appearing to struggle at times to secure the position. However, in light of Jim Harbaugh's public vote of confidence Sunday evening, and B.J. Daniels emergence as an intriguing weapon, Tolzien's apparent regression (or at least non-improvement) after two years in the 49ers system made him expendable.
Now, the 49ers have Colt McCoy, B.J. Daniels and Seneca Wallace behind Colin Kaepernick. Wallace got a little over a minute of playing time at the end of Sunday's game, but with the McCoy vote of confidence, does Wallace have any shot of unseating Daniels? Given what we've seen from Daniels in two games, you would think the 49ers would want to hang on to him for just the potential. They could try and slide him to the waiver wire, but given the dumpster fire that is the New York Jets QB position (and to a lesser extent the Buffalo Bills), as well as teams always looking for young mobile QB talent, can the 49ers risk the possibility he gets claimed off waivers?
Roster cuts will continue today, with a 1:00 p.m. PT deadline for teams to cut down from 90 players to 75 players. Players on PUP and NFI lists (Active or Reserve versions) count toward that 75 player limit. As you can see below, the 49ers are currently at 84 players following the trade of Parys Haralson (assuming it is made official today). That means nine more players need to come off the board.
