49ers training camp: Jonathan Goodwin back at practice in non-contact jersey

The 49ers are back at practice, and welcomed back their center, Jonathan Goodwin. Will he play on Thursday in the preseason opener? We consider the possibilities.

The San Francisco 49ers are slowly getting some of their injured players back, with Jonathan Goodwin the latest to re-join the fold. Per the beat writers, Goodwin returned to practice today in a blu non-contact jersey. The 49ers center had spent the last week sidelined for undisclosed reasons. It would seem to be an injury issue, but without any details, we're left guessing.

Daniel Kilgore has been handling first team center snaps in Goodwin's absence, with Adam Snyder getting some as well. Before practice, offensive coordinator Greg Roman was asked if Kilgore would get the start on Thursday against the Broncos:

"We're going to have to see. I'm not sure. But, he's taken a ton of reps and really coming a long way in the system. So, Dan's a guy that's been pretty multi-dimensional guy for us. We've used him as an extra tight end and what not in the past. But, he's coming along and I'm sure he'll get a bunch of playing time."

Given that Goodwin is only operating with the non-contact jersey, I would be surprised if he got the start on Thursday. At this point, with Kilgore, Snyder and Looney potentially able to handle center snaps, I would be surprised if Goodwin played against the Broncos.

Roman was also asked if Kyle Williams would be healthy enough to play. Roman said that would be a decision the team would make later in the week. Williams and A.J. Jenkins returned to practice yesterday. Given the number of wide receivers competing for playing time, it is kind of important to get both into Thursday's game.
