The San Francisco 49ers have today off, after last night's preseason opener against the Denver Broncos, but we've got some interesting games tonight, with one in particular standing out.
Yes, Chefs Watch is officially on. Alex Smith makes his first start with the Kansas City Chiefs. And no, I did not misspell Chiefs. If you don't get the Chefs joke, check out the video below for an explanation. It is one of my all-time favorite commercials. And if you don't know who the Swedish Chef is, well, I don't think we can be friends!
There are plenty of folks, myself included, interested in tacking Alex Smith in 2013. Even though he is gone, he spent so much time in San Francisco that it should not be a surprise that some people are still curious about his performance.
More importantly for the 49ers, however, is the Alex Smith trade. The 49ers received a second round pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, and a conditional pick in the 2014 draft. The 2013 pick was traded to the Tennessee Titans, and the 49ers used the subsequent pick to select defensive lineman Tank Carradine.
The conditional 2014 pick is a third round pick, but if the Chiefs go 8-8 or better this season, it bumps up to a second round pick. Ideally, the Chiefs go 8-8, and the 49ers end up with a pick in the middle of the second round. I would be fine with a stronger showing from the Chiefs, but the higher the pick, the better.
Over the course of the next five months, we'll be keeping an eye on the Chiefs each week. This will not become Kansas City "west", but we will provide an open thread for Chiefs games (when they don't conflict with the 49ers), and we'll keep a running update each Monday or Tuesday on how Chefs Watch is looking. For more on the Chiefs each week, check out Arrowhead Pride.
For tonight, the Chiefs will face the Saints in their preseason opener. I'd imagine Alex Smith will get a a series or two, but we'll see. If you're watching any other preseason contests, feel free to use this as an open thread.
