Eric Reid injury: 49ers safety takes big hit, goes back to locker room

49ers safety Eric Reid left Sunday's game with the Seahawks in the second quarter. We assess his condition, and his replacement.

Fooch's Update: Reid has officially been ruled out the rest of the game with a concussion.

The 49ers and Seahawks Sunday Night Football game has another injury victim. Free safety Eric Reid went down after tackling wide receiver Sidney Rice. Reid appeared to take a hit to the side of his head on the play. Jim Harbaugh and the medical staff were quickly on the field, talking to Reid and assessing his condition.

Dr. Dan Garza, the team's medical director, led the assessment before they walked Reid off the field. As Reid was walking off, he smiled and seemed to mouth "I'm OK." Dr. Garza walked him away from the field, as they likely were heading back to the locker room.

Michelle Tafoya has since reported that Reid was taken back to assess him for concussion-like symptoms. She said the team removed his helmet and put it away, which seemed to indicate his night is done. We'll wait for more on that.

Reid's departure means Craig Dahl takes over at free safety. The 49ers signed Dahl this offseason as a free agent, a month before they moved up in the draft to select Reid. I imagine in the second half, we'll see the Seahawks take some shots at Dahl. While Dahl is a serviceable backup, he is a distinct downgrade from Reid.
