The 49ers placed Aldon Smith on the Reserve/NFI list on Monday. We take a look at his statement on the matter, as well as that of GM Trent Baalke.

The San Francisco 49ers have officially placed Aldon Smith on the Reserve/NFI (non-football injury) list. Smith reportedly departed for an in-patient rehab facility earlier today. The length of his absence is unknown at this point. The 49ers will make a subsequent roster move at some point in the coming days. Considering the team is playing this Thursday, I imagine it could happen today or first thing tomorrow.

Trent Baalke and Aldon Smith both released statements on the matter.

"Aldon Smith is taking a leave of absence to address a personal matter," said 49ers general manager Trent Baalke. "The 49ers organization both respects and supports Aldon's decision and commends him for taking responsibility for his actions. The long-term well-being of our players is paramount and we will stand by Aldon as he works toward addressing this issue. Due to the private nature of the matter, we will have no further comment."

"I am taking a leave of absence to address my health," said Aldon Smith. "I am sorry that I have affected my team, my family and the organization. I will do everything in my power to handle this situation the best way possible. I appreciate the support of the 49ers and our fans."
