The Green Bay Packers released their first injury report of the week, and the most notable name is a big one. Cornerback Casey Hayward did not practice and has already been declared out for Sunday's game with our 49ers. Hayward suffered a hamstring strain shortly before training camp, and apparently aggravated the injury preseason Week 3 against the Seattle Seahawks.

The folks at Acme Packing Company had a few thoughts on the impact of losing Hayward:

According to Pro Football Focus, Hayward finished the 2012 season as the Packers highest-rated cornerback with an overall rating of +21.2. Not only will he be missed when it comes time to matchup with 49ers stud tight end Vernon Davis, he will also be missed in run defense, especially against the 49ers' brutal attack. A season ago Hayward earned a +2.2 rating against the run and was solid in the two match ups against the 49ers in 2012, according to PFF.

PFF's Jeff Deeney indicated that Hayward had allowed a 31.1 QB rating when targeted in 2012. While I am sometimes skeptical of PFF's grading, but stats like this provide some additional context to a player's performance. And in this case, the Packers are losing out some serious talent. The 49ers still face a tough defense, but look for the 49ers to attack Hayward's replacement hard and heavy.

According to APC, that replacement will be rookie Micah Hyde. The Packers drafted Hyde in the fifth round this year, and he's gotten a positive rating from Pro Football Focus. The positive rating comes primarily from what they deemed a strong performance in 56 Week 2 snaps against the St. Louis Rams. He also had a solid performance in Week 4 against the Chiefs, albeit in only 14 snaps. It'll be a strong test right off the bat.
