Fangio: Nnamdi Asomugha expected to play, serve as No. 3 CB on Sunday

Vic Fangio provided an update on Nnamdi Asomugha's status for Sunday. We break down the playing plans for the 49ers cornerback.

49ers defensive coordinator Vic Fangio met with the media on Thursday, and he had a chance to discuss the 49ers cornerback situation. Fangio indicated that Nnamdi Asomugha would play on Sunday, and would operate as the third cornerback. Nnamdi has been dealing with a collarbone injury, and is wearing a non-contact jersey this week in practice.

The 49ers cornerbacks will get plenty of work on Sunday as they face the potent Packers passing attack. In last season's opener against the Packers, the 49ers spent much of the game in their dime defense, while they were still in plenty of nickel in the playoff matchup. If Nnamdi is set to go on Sunday, he will see extensive playing time.

Nnamdi's stock has risen and fallen through the preseason. There was a lot of positive talk early in camp, and then Vic Fangio proceeded to drop the wet blanket on that. He didn't declare him done, but he did say that Nnamdi had his good days and bad days. At the time, Fangio stated that the team was still figuring out what they had with him.

Since Fangio's comments, Nnamdi put together a solid preseason, handling his guys well. He didn't see a ton of playing time, but he looked solid when he was in there. Now we'll get to see just how solid he really is at this point in his career. Much will depend on how the 49ers pass rush performs, but even still, Aaron Rodgers will have instances where he gets time in the pocket and goes deep. Nnamdi will face plays where he has to run around a little bit longer and stay with his man. We know Rodgers will take his shots at Eric Reid, but I have a hunch he goes after Nnamdi a fair amount as well.
