Eric Reid selected to Jerry Rice Pro Bowl team

The 2014 NFL Pro Bowl is coming up this Sunday, and in a fitting selection, 49ers safety Eric Reid will play on Jerry Rice's team.

It was part of day two of the first ever "fantasy draft" for the Pro Bowl. The NFL is doing everything it can to save the Pro Bowl from extinction. There are some cool aspects to it. For example, Larry Fitzgerald is on Jerry Rice's team, and Patrick Peterson is on Deion Sanders' team. That means at some point on Sunday, we could see Peterson lined up opposite his teammate. I suppose it's of limited interest to some, but for general football fans, it might actually be worthing tuning in.

Another example is Alex Smith was the final QB "selected" (actually assigned in this case) by Rice's team. Chiefs defensive tackle Dontari Poe could potentially be coming after him as a pass rusher. Of course, given that sacks don't generally seem to happen in the Pro Bowl, that probably won't be much of a thing.

I do wonder how long the Pro Bowl will last. The NFL is doing what it can to save the All Star game, but there's just not a whole lot of much to be had from. The draft was a good idea, and there are some interesting matchups to be seen. But odds are pretty good we'll see some miserable, half-assed football. The Pro Bowl is a distant fourth among the four professional sports when it comes to their all star games.
