ESPN's Lisa Salters reported on NFL Insiders that San Francisco 49ers tight end Vernon Davis will be active for Monday Night Football against the St. Louis Rams. Davis sat out last week's game due to back spasms, but was able to get in three limited practice sessions this week. He wore a blue non-contact jersey, but it was still a huge step up from missing all three practices leading up to Week 5. This news is not shocking by any stretch, as most of us figured he would play when he got through a full week of practice. However, it is good to get some further confirmation about Davis.
The question now is how the 49ers will use Davis alongside Vance McDonald. Davis brings a lot as a deep threat, but he also is big part of the offensive line's blocking effort in the ground game. I don't think we see Davis in any kind of decoy role, but we also don't know exactly where his back is at for this game. We'll have to keep an eye out to see if it tightens up at some point, particularly after any hits.
The Rams have a solid defensive front against the run, but struggle if a running back can get past that line. Davis could be a key cog in getting the 49ers run game going. Keep particularly eye on what he does on the left side of the line, as the 49ers have found great success running that way.
