NFL power rankings, Week 9: Are modest shake-ups a sign of things to come?

New, comments

I'm back for even more scrutiny with my Week 9 NFL power rankings. The 49ers had a bye, while several teams around them lost on Sunday. Who should be moved up or down?

Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

The San Francisco 49ers are back on the practice field following their Week 8 bye, but there was plenty of NFL action while they were away. I've got my latest and greatest set of power rankings following a week in which a lot of quality teams lost. I'm sure plenty will disagree with most of what I put together, so feel free to fire away in the comments.

I moved the Arizona Cardinals up to No. 2 behind the Denver Broncos, and I'm sure that will lead to some consternation. I am still somewhat hesitant about where they end up at the end of the season, but they're playing some good football. They've beaten the 49ers and now the Eagles, leaving them at 6-1 with a 2-game lead in the NFC West. It could all come crashing down, and I imagine that would not shock a lot of people. But for now, they're playing well.

This week's biggest move belongs to the New England Patriots. They climbed from No. 10 to No. 3 after another big win. The Chicago Bears have not been the most impressive team, but the way the Patriots handled them was impressive in my mind. Consider this a bit of a recalibration of the Patriots moving forward. That ugly blowout at the ends of the Kansas City Chiefs is harder and harder to remember with their recent strong performances.

The Packers had the biggest drop this week, after losing 44-23 in New Orleans. I don't think they deserve a huge drop because the Saints remain a tough team in the Superdome. That being said, Green Bay has some work to do, but they at least get a pair of home games to help them in that regard. The Packers were one of several high profile teams to lose on Sunday. I did not shake things up too much, but it will be interesting to see how some of these teams rebound in Week 9

Here are my rankings as the 49ers get ready for Week 9 against the St. Louis Rams.
