Aldon Smith suspension unlikely to end this week, wait moves to next week

New, comments

The San Francisco 49ers are awaiting word on if Aldon Smith will be reinstated early from his 9-game suspension. We take a look at where things stand, with some interesting Jeff Fisher comments to consider.

There has been no word on a potential reinstatement of Aldon Smith, which by this point would seem to indicate he will not be playing on Sunday against the St. Louis Rams. This is not exactly shocking, but pretty clear at this point. The next point on the timeline is whether or not Smith will return in time for Week 10 against the New Orleans Saints. We would seemingly hear something on this between now and next Tuesday.

Rams head coach Jeff Fisher spoke with Bay Area media today, and was asked if his team had done any preparation on the off chance Smith would play. Fisher said the coaches had discussed it, but seemed to indicate they were not going to do much if any preparation for that possibility. He could be covering for what they're practicing, but he also said, "I think the league has a responsibility to inform us early enough in the week so we have a chance to gameplay for it."

Fisher is a member of the NFL's competition committee, and seemingly one of the more well-respected figures in the NFL. I don't know if that would play into any notification on Aldon Smith's return this week, but this strikes me as about as clear an answer as we might get on this. We might get word this week that Smith will be reinstated next week for the Saints game, but I would be shocked if he was reinstated for this weekend's game against the Rams.
