Mike Iupati cleared through concussion protocol, will play Sunday vs. Rams

The San Francisco 49ers will welcome back left guard Mike Iupati in Week 9 when they host the St. Louis Rams. We break down the implications.

San Francisco 49ers left guard Mike Iupati informed Matt Maiocco that he has been cleared through the concussion protocol and will play this Sunday against the St. Louis Rams. Jim Harbaugh had mentioned on Monday that Iupati was cleared, so I guess we can just consider this final confirmation.

Iupati suffered the concussion in Week 6 against the Rams, and sat out Week 7 against the Denver Broncos. His return seemingly bodes well for a run game that has been a bit inconsistent at times. The 49ers have found a lot of success running to the left side when Iupati is in there with Joe Staley.

The Rams loaded up the box to stop the run game in Week 6, and the 49ers responded with a heavy passing attack. I am curious to see how the Rams game plan this time around, having been burned with their previous strategy. The Rams defensive line is showing some improved play, and it is safe to say Aaron Donald will be one of the primary guys to watch on Sunday. The Rams had a big game against Seattle, and then proceeded to fall completely flat against Kansas City. What kind of rebound, if any, do we see this Sunday?
