We'll have plenty about the dominant run game, but first up, a big hat tip to San Francisco 49ers kicker Phil Dawson. The 39-year old veteran was perfect on Sunday, connecting on five field goals in the 49ers 22-17 win over the Kansas City Chiefs. Dawson's performance included a 55-yarder and a 52-yarder. He was going to get a shot at a 54-yarder, but the Chiefs were penalized for too many men on the field, and the 49ers got a fresh set of downs.
After the game, Dawson was the first person to the interview podium after head coach Jim Harbaugh. Considering the two 50+ field goals, and the fact that the 49ers offense desperately needed a big day from Dawson, it was fitting he got some time in the spotlight. Dawson struggled in the preseason and then to start the year. His preseason was all over the place, and he missed his only attempt in Week 1 against the Dallas Cowboys. Since then he is 11 of 12, including connections on his last nine.
Much of the talk in the preseason was about the field surface at Levi's Stadium. Some non-football events left it incredibly shoddy, and nobody was happy. The team got in some new turf, but there were still some questions coming out of the preseason. Fortunately, however, things have been cleared up. After the game, Dawson was effusive in his praise. He went so far as to say that considering the state of the turf previously, hats off to the grounds crew.
I think most of us were concerned with Dawson's performance coming into the season. The David Akers experience was not a fun one, and while that due primarily to injury, it just seems like you never know when a veteran kicker will lose it. There is a lot of football left to be played, but Dawson is rolling right now.
