Fooch's Update: The 49ers made the move official, releasing Kassim Osgood to make room. Here are some updated thoughts.

The San Francisco 49ers have brought back an old friend. Eric Branch and Aaron Wilson are both reporting that Raymond "Bubba" Ventrone is signing with the team. There is no word yet on who he will replace, but Branch has said Ventrone officially signed his contract.

Linebacker Nick Moody suffered a hamstring injury in the 49ers Week 5 win over the Kansas City Chiefs. There has been no word on how serious the injury is, but it is possible Ventrone is being brought to replace Moody on special teams for an as yet to be determined amount of time.

Ventrone was with the 49ers through training camp, but was part of the team's final roster cuts. He is listed as a safety, but during the regular season he only plays on special teams. That narrows down the number of options for why this move would happen. The 49ers will likely announce a corresponding roster move on Wednesday.
