The San Francisco 49ers made a roster move official on Wednesday. They announced the signing of safety Bubba Ventrone, and the release of wide receiver Kassim Osgood.
This special teams swap is a curious move considering Osgood's reputation on special teams. On Monday, Jim Harbaugh referred to Osgood as the team's best special teams player. Osgood has handled a lot of gunner work in punt coverage, so one possibility is the team was happy with another option at gunner, and wanted to beef up the group somewhere else. Nick Moody suffered a hamstring injury, and this move could be to cover for him while he is hurt.
I don't know if we'll ever know for certain, but if Moody doesn't play this weekend, that would certainly provide one reason. If that is the case, it would not surprise me at all to see Osgood brought back at some point later this season.
