The San Francisco 49ers put together a bit more balanced offensive attack on Sunday, defeating the New Orleans Saints 27-24. The execution left something to be desired at times, but it was enough to get the job done.
Frank Gore was back in the saddle with a bigger workload, rushing 23 times for 81 yards and a touchdown. It was his first rushing touchdown since Week 2, and his first 20+ carry game since Week 4. In rushing for 81 yards, Gore now has 10,520 career rushing yards. After a slow few weeks over the last month, Gore found himself moving up the career rushing leaderboard. He climbed past Eddie George and Tiki Barber, and now sits at No. 24 all time. Here is a rundown of the next group of players in front of him
23. Thomas Jones - 10,591
22. Jamal Lewis - 10,607
21. Ricky Watters - 10,643
20. Warrick Dunn - 10,967
19. Steven Jackson - 11,107
The 49ers travel to face the New York Giants this weekend. The Giants are middle of the road at best against the run, and considering the success the 49ers find with the run, we could very well see him surpass Jones and Lewis. Steven Jackson is still active, so Gore likely will not catch him this season. Nonetheless, there is a decent chance Gore climbs into the top 20 by the end of this season.
Of course, one of my favorite plays involving Gore did not involve him touching the ball. How can you not love seeing him upend the pass rusher? I could watch this all day.
