San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh met with the media Monday afternoon, and he had a chance to provide some updates on practice windows for players on the PUP and NFI lists. Harbaugh said that NaVorro Bowman, Garrett Celek, Brandon Thomas and Keith Reaser would all have their 21-day practice windows opened. He also said the team would look to activate Glenn Dorsey this week.
Harbaugh clarified that some of these players would not be practicing full-go right away. He said Garrett Celek would be able to come right back to practice, while Brandon Thomas and Keith Reaser would be only doing walkthroughs and some minimal individual work. He said NaVorro Bowman was somewhere in between those two levels.
I'm not entirely sure what the plan will be with Celek. They have been playing with Derek Carrier as the third tight end, but the addition of Stevie Johnson and Brandon Lloyd has led to fewer three tight end formations. Carrier is viewed as more of a pass catcher than a blocker, so I wonder if the potential return of Celek could result in more of the heavier formations. It's hard to figure out what the plan is exactly.
The next notable deadline will be Tuesday, December 9. For the players not activated before then, that is the drop-dead date to activate them, release them or place them on season-ending IR. That is likely when we will find out NaVorro Bowman's status with any sort of finality.
