Tavon Austin should have been called for a safety, but was not

The San Francisco 49ers and St. Louis Rams seem to enjoy crazy plays late in the half. 49ers kicker Phil Dawson attempted a 55-yard field goal attempt, and it came up short. Rams return man Tavon Austin was hanging down at the edge of the end zone, and caught the short field goal attempt. He then looked to run it out, only to stop and then seemingly go backward into the end zone. Common sense would say it was a safety.

Well, Jerome Boger would beg to differ. His crew decided Austin's forward progress was stopped while he was in the field of play. They said that was enough to uphold the call. I suppose we should not be shocked that Jerome Boger's crew screwed it up. The 49ers and Rams head into halftime tied at 10.
