Washington will face the San Francisco 49ers short at least two starters. The team announced on Friday that nose tackle Chris Baker, and tight end Jordan Reed are both OUT. Left tackle Trent Williams and left guard Shawn Lauvao are both listed as questionable.
Washington rotates at the nose tackle position, and in reality, given the 49ers growing use of 3-WR sets, Washington will likely spend a good deal of time in their nickel. The loss of Reed is a bigger deal, as he has been a very solid weapon in the passing game for Washington. They still have DeSean Jackson, Pierre Garcon, and of course Alfred Morris in the run game, but the loss of Reed likely makes things a little easier for the 49ers linebackers.
Trent Williams is questionable, but the odds seem pretty good he will not play. Shawn Lauvao had a concussion, but is back at practice, and he probably will play. The loss of Williams would be a big one, as he has been the most consistent performer on the offensive line. If Williams cannot go, Morgan Moses will start in his place. Cam Inman got some interesting quotations about Moses from 49ers running back Carlos Hyde. The two of them played together in high school at Fork Union Military Academy in Virginia. Hyde was effusive in his praise, but that was also several years ago, so it is safe to say, Aldon Smith is still going to be licking his lips at this potential matchup.
