The San Francisco 49ers have two open spots on their practice squad, but they might be close to filling one of them. Matt Barrows is reporting the 49ers will bring back tight end Xavier Grimble. The move makes sense in light of Garrett Celek's ankle injury. There is no word on his status for Saturday, but if he can't go, the 49ers would likely then promote Grimble to the 53-man roster to join Vernon Davis and Asante Cleveland on the tight end depth chart. The 49ers signed Grimble to the practice squad in September, only to release him a month ago when they signed Marcus Cromartie.
The 49ers still have one more practice squad spot to fill, and it will depend in part on how injuries impact the rest of the roster. One area of injury on Sunday was the inside linebacker position. Chris Borland suffered an ankle injury, and was replaced by Nick Moody. Michael Wilhoite suffered an injury as well and briefly left the field, but was able to return.
Borland is getting an MRI this week, but if he is unable to go, it is possible the 49ers have a solution in mind. Last week, the 49ers worked out linebacker Desmond Bishop, but never signed him. This afternoon, someone tweeted along this photo from a 49ers fan page on Facebook.

I have been unable to get confirmation from Bishop's agent if this has actually happened. He appears to be signing a 49ers football, which could just be a coincidence or an old picture. But if Borland's MRI raises any questions, it makes sense to sign Bishop. The team would likely make room for the Bishop addition by moving Kassim Osgood to injured reserve. We'll keep an eye on out for any developments.
