The San Francisco 49ers made a pair of roster moves as they try and get some healthy bodies on the roster. The team announced the signing of running back Phillip Tanner, and the placement of tight end Garrett Celek on injured reserve.
The addition of Tanner indicates Frank Gore and/or Carlos Hyde will potentially be unable to play this Saturday. We have not heard word on Hyde's back MRI, but we do know Gore is working his way through the concussion protocol. If Gore cannot go on Saturday, Hyde would potentially start in his place. Tanner and Alfonso Smith would serve as Hyde's backups. The 49ers were down to just Alfonso Smith this past week.
Celek injured his ankle on Sunday, and the team signed tight end Xavier Grimble to the practice squad earlier this week. This indicated Celek's injury might cost him at least one game. The 49ers will likely promote Grimble to the active roster at the end of the week, at which point he'll join Vernon Davis and Asante Cleveland on the tight end depth chart.
