The San Francisco 49ers have made a roster move in advance of their Week 16 matchup with the San Diego Chargers. The team announce they have placed linebacker Chris Borland on injured reserve, and promoted linebacker Chase Thomas from the practice squad. Thomas started the season on the practice squad, and was promoted for three games in November.
Thomas will likely be active later today, and will work primarily on special teams. The 49ers have some depth issues at linebacker right now though, so it is entirely possible he could find himself in with the starting defense. The inside linebackers are down to Michael Wilhoite and Nick Moody. The outside linebackers could be short Ahmad Brooks if his thumb injury keeps him out of the game. Aldon Smith will start on one side, and Dan Skuta and Aaron Lynch would split time on the other side.
Thomas will likely finish out the season, while Borland will rehab and get ready for the offseason workout program later this spring.
