49ers declare Eric Reid OUT with a concussion

The 49ers ruled Eric Reid out of their game with the Chargers following a first half concussion. His status for Week 17 will be in doubt.

The San Francisco 49ers will be without their free safety for the second half of Week 16 as Eric Reid has suffered a concussion. The team had declared him questionable to return earlier in the second quarter, but the team has since ruled him out.

This is Reid's third concussion since entering the NFL last season. He suffered two fairly early last season, but seemed to be doing fine for much of this season. This concussion will only serve to raise questions about if Reid can survive the physicality of the NFL. Concussions can vary so drastically between players, and it is hard to tell what it means for future injuries.

For Reid, odds seem unlikely that he will play in Week 17. He could very well get through the concussion protocol this week, but there is nothing to be gained at this point, so they might as well just let him sit and get back to 100 percent. Craig Dahl entered in his place after the injury, and would likely get the start in Week 17.
