The San Francisco 49ers will not take home many individual honors this season, but there are still some weekly awards to be had. The FedEx Air and Ground nominations are out for Week 16, and Frank Gore has been nominated for the Ground award. You can vote for Gore over at NFL.com/fedex.
Gore put together a throwback performance on Sunday, rushing for 158 yards and a touchdown on 26 carries. The performance moved him up to 10,929 career rushing yards. He is 38 yards away from 1,000 for the season, as well as No. 20 on the all-time rushing list. Warrick Dunn currently holds the spot with 10,967 yards. Gore is 71 yards away from 11,000 for his career. Given that Week 17 might very well be his final game in a San Francisco 49ers uniform, it would be nice to see him go out with a bang.
Gore likely has another couple years in him, and that could be enough to get him into the Top 10 on the all-time rushing leaderboard. Here is how the leaderboard ranks ahead of him to No. 10:
20. Warrick Dunn - 10,967
19. O.J. Simpson - 11,236
18. Corey Dillon - 11,241
17. John Riggins - 11,352
16. Steven Jackson - 11,88
15. Fred Taylor - 11,695
14. Thurman Thomas - 12,074
13. Franco Harris - 12,120
12. Marcus Allen - 12,243
11. Edgerrin James - 12,246
10. Marshall Faulk - 12,279
it's going to take some work, but if he gets another two or three years in, he could very well get up to No. 10. Right now he needs 1,351 yards to pass Marshall Faulk for No. 10 all time. If he gets to the top 10, the only players not in the Hall of Fame are Jerome Bettis and Ladanian Tomlinson. LT is likely going to get in once eligible in 2017. Bettis seems like a guy who will eventually get in, but it might take some time. If Gore gets into that rarified Top 10 air, it would be a travesty if he did not eventually get a gold jacket.
Make sure to head over and vote for Gore. His competition for the award includes Marshawn Lynch and Jeremy Hill. Lynch had that monster run that got all sorts of coverage, while Hill had a big touchdown run on Monday Night Football. Gore is deserving of the award for that performance on Saturday, so make sure and VOTE.
