Welp, so much for Alex Boone playing on Sunday. The San Francisco 49ers announced on Friday they have placed Boone and safety Bubba Ventrone on injured reserve. They filled the two free roster spots by signing wide receiver Trindon Holliday and promoting cornerback Cameron Fuller from the practice squad.
It will be interesting to see who gets the start at right guard in place of Boone. Normally it would be Joe Looney, but last week, the 49ers deactivated Looney and kept Dillon Farrell active. Do we see Farrell get a crack at right guard, or does Looney get activated again. Jim Harbaugh meets with the media at 1:40, and while I don't expect him to give anything notable away, maybe he'll let something slide.
The 49ers worked out Trindon Holliday back in November, but never signed him. The team announced this addition as a 2-year contract. I don't expect the team to drop him after only one week, so it would seem like Holliday will be in to compete with Bruce Ellington for the return role next season. It is possible he gets return work this week as well, so again, like with Farrell, we'll see what the game brings.
The 49ers have now placed 18 players on injured reserve. The list includes:
CB Kenneth Acker
OG Alex Boone
