The San Francisco 49ers and Jim Harbaugh are fast approaching the conclusion of the 2014 season, and that means decisions will be on the table. The University of Michigan has been the prominent name mentioned, and that has only picked up steam in recent days. Friday afternoon, Bruce Feldman reported that Michigan brass and their search firm are going to be up in the Bay Area this weekend as part of their pursuit of Jim Harbaugh.
This another anonymous report, so we do need to take it with a certain grain of salt. This could be Michigan making sure the world knows what's up, or it could be David Dunn trying to push this info to create more leverage for other potential deals. None of us really has any idea, although it makes sense to build leverage. What other reason is there to get that information out there? Maybe Michigan wants to head NFL teams off at the pass? Who knows.
All I know now is that, while I would not be surprised if Harbaugh ended up in Michigan, I'm kind of hoping he ends up anywhere but Michigan. Their fans have gotten incredibly confident in the notion that he is headed there, and some of them have gotten just a little bit mouthy. At this point, I would love to see Harbaugh leverage Michigan's interest and get a solid deal somewhere in the NFL. There will be some who don't want to see him potentially facing the 49ers again, but I really don't care at this point. My new goal is to see him end up anywhere but Michigan, just to disappoint UM fans. It's slightly irrational, but this whole thing is crazy enough that I'm not overly concerned about appearances.
