The San Francisco 49ers have begun their interview process according to a couple reports. Matt Barrows tweeted that the team interviewed defensive coordinator Vic Fangio on Tuesday morning. FOX Sports 1's Mike Garafolo tweeted that the team will interview Seattle Seahawks defensive coordinator Dan Quinn Tuesday evening. Garafolo also said Adam Gase plans to interview with the 49ers. The team requested permission, but sometimes coaches still in the playoffs will decline such interviews.
The 49ers can go a lot of directions with their next head coach. There is the option of an internal hire vs. and external hire. But more importantly is the discussion of an offensive-minded coach vs. a defensive-minded coach. The 49ers offense was the big problem in 2014, and really had been more inconsistent than the defense over the last four years.
That being said, I'd rather they find the best potential leader (or teacher, if Jed York is going to stick with that phrase), and build the best coaching staff they can. If Vic Fangio or Dan Quinn, or any defensive-minded coach got the job, I could live with that so long as that coach had the right offensive staff. The head coach certainly could be the guy calling the plays on one side of the ball, but from an offensive-minded perspective I'd still like a capable offensive coordinator in place.
