The San Francisco 49ers should have a decision as early as today as to the status of linebacker NaVorro Bowman. Head coach Jim Harbaugh told the media that the medical staff would meet on Monday to make the decision. The 49ers placed Bowman on the PUP list to start training camp, and recently activated his 21-day practice window.
The team has until tomorrow (Tuesday, December 9) to activate him off the PUP list, but odds seem very high that he will not be activated. The loss to the Oakland Raiders effectively ended the team's playoff chances. It is possible if the team made the playoffs that they might activate him to have him ready later in January, but that is likely no longer a significant concern. Vic Fangio previously said Bowman would need a couple weeks of actual practice to get his legs back under him. With only three weeks left, there really is nothing to be gained by getting him on the field.
The key now is getting him ready for the 2015 season. The team returns to offseason training activities in the spring, so there is a lot of rehab time in front of Bowman. I would not expect a lot of participation in on-field activities, as the key really is just having him ready for the start of training camp in July. He can participate in all the classroom work this spring and summer, and then hopefully be ready to hit the field at training camp in July.
